Requirements: Paper # 1:
Complete 2 separate fictional case studies based on the following two scenarios and your answer to the reflection questions. You will need to turn in both scenarios in one document with the reflection at the end.
NOTE: This paper assignment has been constructed with the knowledge that we have yet to explore specific policies associated with aging. Some of these policies are introduced in your readings and there are others you may be aware of from your previous study. The intent of this case study is to identify your policy knowledge, your thoughts about the aging life course, and what your view is on aging. So, be creative with your case studies…I want to know what you think!
Complete both Scenarios and Part 3.
Scenario 1: Aging in America in 2021`”Americans are living longer and living well…or are they?”
Create a fictional case study of how an older adult (aged 75) in America might be living. Based on your readings, demographic data, your experiences, and your own knowledge complete the following:
Disease and illness (i.e. are they living in a diseased state or are they healthy)?
Are they more likely to be married, divorced, single, or widowed (be sure to include gender differences)?
Are they living independently or in some type of assisted living?
Are they more likely to be working or retired?
Are they fiscally sound or struggling financially? What sources of income do they have?
What policies exist to help them through the next 10 years? Explain at least 3 policies you think would affect them.
Scenario 2: Aging in America in the Future: “It would be tragically short-sighted if stereotypes about old age and the traditional family blind us to the new demographic challenges or possibilities and real opportunities associated with longer life spans.”
Create another case study of what it might be like when YOU are 75 years old. Based on your readings, extrapolations from current demographic data and your own knowledge, complete the following:
Are you more likely to be living in a diseased state or a healthy state?
Are you more likely to be married, divorced, single, or widowed?
Are you more likely to be living independently or in some type of assisted living?
Are you more likely to be working or retired?
Are you fiscally sound or struggling financially?
What policies would you like to see in place to assist you through the next 10 years?
Part 3: Reflection:
What similarities and differences developed between the two case studies you created? Explain.
Based on what you wrote, are you confident or worried about population aging in America?
How will population aging affect current workers and future policy?
