The Monroe Doctrine was a policy by the United States that aimed at opposing colonialism during the 1800s. The policy aimed at opposing colonization of the Americas by various European nations. The Doctrine stated that the United States would not interfere with any of the colonies that were controlled by various European countries. It also suggested that any effort by European countries to control independent states in America would be seen as a form of unfriendly disposition towards the United States. The policy Doctrine was issued at a time when most Latin American colonies had gained independence from their colonizers who were mainly Spanish and Portuguese Empires.
