LESSON 9 – Prevention – Facilitating a Prevention Workshop

Preparing for a new school year can be both exciting and stressful for children. Whether starting first grade or high school, a new school year means new experiences, relationships, responsibilities, and concerns. Among those concerns includes smoking, underage drinking and other substance use. The back-to-school season is the perfect time to address concerns about substance abuse and mental health issues with children, teens, and adolescents.

To prepare for this lesson:

After reviewing the material previously assigned, (or any that you gather/research on your own) picture yourself working in the field for a prevention program. Part of your job responsibilities include facilitating an all-day workshop for students, parents and community members focused on substance use prevention. The workshop will be held at the local middle school or high school (you pick) in your community. How will you use the prevention resources, readings, and information that has previously been assigned to facilitate your workshop? (again, feel free to use other prevention research).

Answer the following questions and post to the discussion board:

1) what information you would use

2) How you would share it (lecture, powerpoint, handouts, discussion, etc.)

3) what activities would the participants engage in?
