1.Since more and more people are getting used to relying on the convenience of their smart phones, I decided to talk about the usage of dining mobile applications that make ordering food at your personal convenience. The Smart phone app called “Savoir“, targets establishments that are social and healthy choices. Diners want higher quality, better sourced ingredients that are easier to locate. The popular app is home to 600 restaurants in the Chicago area, each one tested and approved for service (FSR)!
A local Chicago restaurant named Blackbird was featured on the app. Blackbird featured local Chicago cuisine, American, Contemporary, and Vegetarian foods. The application helped draw in customers who were looking for that ideal social spot with a place to have healthy choices.
This app seemed promising, I had noticed that it had not had much activity since 2015 and couldn’t be found on the app store itself. Even their Twitter account had not been used since 2015. Although “Savoir” didn’t seem to last, there are definitely other apps with similar functions. Uber Eats for example, makes searching for food very easily, as it will ask you what kind you are hungry for.
There are a few factors to consider when putting your restaurant on an apps radar. Are there fees involved? Especially with those who are offering pick up services. Is the app service reliable enough to have your name featured on their platform?

2. For this week’s discussion, I will be taking about Buzztime. They are a company that offers “menu viewing, ordering, and payment options seamlessly integrated with entertainment offerings on a tablet-based platform.” (Buzztime…,2015) Including trivia, cards, arcade, and sports games. With Buzztime a guest can view the menu while waiting for a table and play games to pass time. When sitting at a table they can scan through the menu, place an order, and eventually pay. The need to hail down a server is no longer necessary. A guest can place extra orders or drink refills from the tablet and have it brought to the table. “Through tabletop tablets, patrons are now able to create the kind of experience they desire, ordering and refilling when and how they wish,” said Ram Krishnan, Buzztime CEO. For families dining with kids, they can be kept entertained within tablet games and puzzles. Even adults can take park with trivia and card games. Patrons can create the dining experience they want, a slow and intimate meal, or a fast and casual meal.
Buzztime claims to have tablets set up in more than 2,700 locations across North America. In locations like bars, bowling alleys, and breweries, restaurants, coffee shops, and colleges. As well as many more. Until recently they were also in every Buffalo Wild Wings in the country with Tom Renfro the president/CEO stating “The best thing about Buzztime is that it helps you build a loyal customer fan base. I can attest to the fact that we have several guests that are here almost every day. Buzztime helped make that happen.” In bars, it is shown to increase the average check order by 21% per table. As well as increasing dwell time and turning a slow night into an event. Ed Lavallee, general manager of Beef O’ Brady’s in Kentucky said that “Buzztime is a part of our promotion and entertainment. It is a big customer attraction which keeps the players coming back for more.” Buzztime has a list of industry companies that boast about their services. They offer consistent quality and constant updating of their games and software.
As tempting as it is to opt for technology in all restaurants. It can come with its own challenges. As we all know technology is fickle. It works when it wants and breaks down with no notice. As a restaurant no matter how large or small the fear of making a switch to full tech operations is very real. Reservations can get lost, tabletop tablets can glitch and turn off mid-order, payment scanners can get jammed and not work. There is also the possibility of guests not liking the new technology implementation. Guests of an older age often do not like change to restaurants and do not understand technology. It could be a frightening experience going to a restaurant and having to order and pay on a tablet. Restaurants and businesses implementing this new changed need to keep in mind the age of their guests and ways to combat challenges that may arise. Such as keeping paper menus on hand if a guest requests one.
