High School Athletic Topic
The high school topic that I identified and that is of great interest is redshirting. In the past, redshirting was the practice of postponing entrance into kindergarten so as to allow physical growth, intellectual growth, and socio-emotional development of children (Jones). However, in the modern day, it refers to the intentional decision by athletes, coaches, and parents for high school students to repeat a grade so that they can gain an athletic advantage over their peers while at the same time increasing the length of their sport career in high school (Souders). In recent years, several states have developed penalties and regulations that aim at penalizing students or athletes who repeat a grade so that they can gain an advantage over their peers. Redshirting is an issue that needs to be discussed in the sporting industry so as to ensure that athletes do not repeat grades in high school as this would offer them an unfair advantage over their peers.
