The Origins of the Civil War

            The American Civil War, which began in 1861 and ended in 1865 had devastating effects on the United States. It led to loss of life and destruction of property. However, it made the states to unite and form a very a strong and powerful nation that exists today. The war was prompted by various incidents with some of them playing a major role than others. The first factor that contributed to the dispute was the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The Congress was compelled to develop a policy to guide the expansion of slavery in the U.S. after the purchase of Louisiana in 1803. However, Missouri applied to be a slave state, a move that caused a bitter debate on the issue. The addition of pro-slavery legislators from Missouri would give the faction supporting slavery a majority in the Senate (Doyle, 2014). For this reason, the Congress had to reach a compromise to solve the issue.
