The Origins of the Civil War
The institution of slavery brought about a series of confrontations that led to the civil war (Historynet, 2019). In 1803, Louisiana was purchased by President Thomas Jefferson. Following the purchase, a policy was established by the congress to guide slavery expansion into the new western territory. In 1817, Missouri filed its first application to become a slave state. Congress was considering this application in early 1819.
