Beginning in the 1870s, investors in Southern California worked hard to sell Los Angeles and its surrounding environs to the rest of the nation and the world. This boosterism produced a cultural and physical landscape that hid important parts of the region’s history and created “fantasy pasts” and “unnatural nature.” Later, in the 20th century, there were political and cultural challenges to these invented pasts.  Using lecture notes, the films, visual material, and the Delyser, Sackman, Kropp, Wyman, Pagan, and Araiza essays, discuss how Southern California was “invented” and how this history was later challenged by Mexican-American youth in the 1940s and organized social protests in the 1960s.
