According to Tavris, the perception of women as intimacy experts has been primarily a result of an effort to change the previous views in the society that viewed such emotional stability as less important compared to having a task-oriented perception on issues. Prior to the development, men were largely viewed as being in possession of the qualities that would be considered ideal while women were primarily considered to be inferior. Ultimately, the divide had significantly affected the nature of relationships within the household, in which case women were treated as being inferior to men. However, Tavris posits that the contemporary perception of women as being intimacy experts has led men consulting published material to make improvements in their behavior, which would ultimately bring them at par with women.
