Structuring the Main Point
Worksheet for Preparing for the Explanatory Talk
When you give your explanatory talk, you should prepare in advance 2-4 talking points underneath your overarching core idea or thesis that you could discuss with your listener, depending on the needs of your listener. You likely will not have the time to discuss all of these points, but preparing them ahead of time ensures that you can talk about them effectively if time permits.
According to Chapter 4, each talking point should have a clear structure of its own. You can use this worksheet to plan each of your points in a way that uses this three-part structure.
Step 1 – State the Main Idea
Step 2 – Give Information to Support the Main Idea and Use Tools from Chapter 4 to Explain It
• What specific pieces of information will you give to your listener? Cite a credible source for each piece of information that you give that did not come from firsthand experience.
• List multiple tools from Chapter 4 that you can use in the discussion to build an understanding of this information with your listener (e.g., definition, comparison, contrast, vivid description, metaphor, stories)
Step 3 – Return to the Main Idea
• Restate the single sentence with which you began your discussion of this talking point and briefly clarify how the information that you’ve given in this point supports it.
