What is the difference between an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and an Intrustion Prevention System (IPS)? Which one is better for a corporate environment and why?

What elements should be included in an Information Security Policy for a corporate entity? What elements should be included in the policy no matter the size of the business ? Why?

An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a system which identifies network traffic for suspicious actions and gives signals once such an activity is learnt. Although detection plus reporting is the main function, other intrusion detection systems can take actions the minute suspicious activity or abnormal traffic is spotted, like blocking traffic directed from anomalous IP addresses (Day, 2006).
