Chapter 10

Initial Impression

The primary impression made from the chapter is the extent of social change in society resulting from development in various activities. Starting from the basic hunter-gatherers societies, the chapter highlights the development of variations in human activities making it clear that availability of surplus production was a primary driver in determining the extent of development (Stark, 2004). Consequently, with the agrarian communities, there may have been significant improvement in agricultural production, but still not enough o feed the entire world population, which explains the slow rate of population growth and diversification of human activities. As there were not sufficient innovations to produce so much that a large number of people were engaged in alternative activities, the population involved in farming was significantly large. Ultimately, the industrial development revolutionized agricultural production so much to the extent that the contemporary society has only a small proportion of the population engaged in agricultural production. In essence, the chapter creates the impression that agriculture and development therein has been the primary source of influence on the development experienced in contemporary society.
