There are five patterns of knowledge that define how knowledge is acquired in the nursing practice. These patterns include personal knowledge, ethics, aesthetics, and empirical as well as social-political. Personal knowledge can be defined as the wisdom that people acquire on their own. This type of wisdom is acquired through personal experiences. Personal knowledge is therefore learned through reflection, observation and self-actualization. When people have knowledge about themselves, they are able to create and maintain authentic relationships in therapy. The empirical knowledge can be defined as knowledge that is gained from research as well as objective facts.
