On college campuses, an increasing number of students are victims of hate incidents. These incidents affect students directly and indirectly. Indeed, the entire college community can feel the repercussions of a single act of intolerance. PICK ONE of the following real-life examples below. Describe how you would respond effectively as a student. What would you do? Why? To whom would your response be directed? Why?
In the entrance to a dormitory, you discover a message written on the dry erase board that describes Blacks as welfare recipients and STD spreaders.
A columnist for a student newspaper refers to Whites as “irredeemable racists” and calls for Blacks to execute Whites who pose a threat.
A college fraternity holds a “Mexican Border Party.” To gain entrance, students have to crawl under a barbed-wire barrier.
A group of students takes it upon themselves to sell T-shirts with anti-homosexual slogans. One of the T-shirts advocates violence against gays and lesbians. Another has the words “Homophobic and Proud of It” printed on the front.
