Guidelines for Draft of Part One
So keeping in mind that this first paper will form component one of your final research paper, here are some guidelines:
1. It should be 4 pages, double-spaced, normal fonts and normal formatting. Follow MLA or Chicago style for your formatting.
2. I might suggest the following general structure for the essay, but you can modify this as you need/want to in order to fit your project:
a. First, you should briefly discuss your general research question (no more than 1 page – you’ll be elaborating on this more when you compile your full paper).
b. Second, you should introduce the medieval author you’re studying – tell your readers who he or she is, when they lived, what (according to your secondary literature) some of the major themes of their work are, and anything else you think is important to know (1-pages).
c. Third, the major focus of your paper should be an exposition of the text – a summary of the major points of the text in general, and its answer to your research question in particular (2 pages). Especially if you have a large work, but even if it’s a short text, you won’t be able to give a paragraph-by-paragraph summary, so choose the 2-3 major points that are most important to understanding this text.
d. Fourth, you should then evaluate the text, using secondary sources that comment upon the text – scholars who have looked at it, input from journal articles, etc. 2 pages).
e. NOTE – you may find it easier to integrate items c and d, than to try to do them in 2 separate sections – that will likely depend upon your particular focus.
f. You should conclude this section by reviewing what you said, and what you will be studying next – when you complete the final paper and have more conclusions about your topic as a whole, you’ll be able to expand and better integrate this conclusion.
3. This must be uploaded via Canvas , AND you should bring a copy with you to class so that we can do some peer editing.
