Human services professionals working in the health and behavioral health arenas have some specific considerations with HIPAA and the Privacy Rule that modified HIPAA in 2003. These rules need to be studied in-depth to better understand the dilemmas experienced by agencies trying to comply with these sometimes complicated laws. In this discussion, evaluate the importance of HIPAA and PHI in various human services settings. In your initial post, suggest at least two strategies that can be used to prevent privacy and data breaches in a health or behavioral health setting. For example, in certain cases, patients can be involuntarily committed (e.g., by a court order) to a hospital because of symptoms indicating possible harm to self or others, and release of PHI becomes more complex.
