Question
Attached is the final exam. Please email your answers back to me by this Friday evening. Good luck!
I thought these notes might help, as you start thinking about question #2 on the final.
WHERE ARE WE WITH IMMIGRATION NOW AND WHAT MIGHT CHANGE UNDER BIDEN?
I. Under the Trump administration (according to the article)
Legal immigration was decreased by 1/2.
Refugee and asylum admissions were gutted. (But remember — refugees and asylum seekers are different.)
1/2 the number of immediate relatives of immigrants legally here were admitted.
The “diversity migration program” (visa lottery?) was stopped. This would give green cards to underrepresented groups in order to increase diversity in this country. (Many were from different African countries.)
II. What will the Biden administration have the power to do (without going through Congress)
Increase refugee admissions relatively quickly (15,000 – 100,00 potentially)
Stop work on the Wall
Renew DACA
Continue TPS (Temporary Protected Status)
III. What will the Biden administration need Congress to approve
Make DACA permanent
Change laws to make legal immigration easier
Pathway to citizenship — Create laws to give undocumented immigrants a way to have legal permanent residency here or U.S. citizenship
Asylum system — Was a mess before Trump, and became more of a mess over the last four years. This will be difficult to fix.
