Agriculture in the United States includes agencies that deal with food, drugs, and the environment. These are essential to the nutrition, health, and survival of our country. To some degree, the area of agriculture should be treated differently from a legal and political perspective because the negative effects could cripple or damage the nation’s way of life in terms of receiving needed assistance. Adding a department such as the Food and Drug Administration helped the government create programs such as SNAP and TANF. These programs aid in feeding impoverished families. However, since the government possessed a position in the food and drug arena, it gave them an opportunity to create provisions that regulated the branding or misbranding of foods. Safety measures were enacted to ensure the safe production and transportation of goods were met. The government also used its power to prohibit products such as alcohol. Because agriculture depends on the natural resources of the world, it is fair to exempt it from certain environmental laws. The results of production from agriculture promote the environment and the ecological component of the world helps produce and recycle products created and released through farming. Labor is required to produce goods and drugs for the public and however, the labor force has vastly decreased due to advancements in technology that require less human interaction. Though agriculture should be exempt from some laws, it should still be held accountable for the externalities they create. Such results can cause pollution and other wasteful products that can harm the environment.
