Module 5
Familiar Drugs
In this module, we will explore some of the effects of familiar drugs such as tobacco, caffeine, and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and supplements.
Smoking causes many chronic diseases, such as lung cancer, heart disease, and a variety of respiratory diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2009), tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States (para. 1)
Caffeine is a bitter substance that is naturally produced in the leaves of many plants. It can also be produced artificially. Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, nuts, and some medicines. It is considered a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system and produces a variety of effects on the body s metabolism. As you will read in your text, caffeine is thought to be the world s most common psychostimulant.
Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and dietary supplements are products that can be purchased without a prescription. They are commonly used to treat symptoms of minor injuries (i.e., muscle aches, cuts, abrasions) or illnesses (i.e., cold, cough, headache, etc.) that may not require the supervision of a doctor or medical professional. There are thousands of OTC products on the market, ranging from acne products to vitamins to weight-loss products. OTC products are not closely regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and consumers should be careful to make wise, informed decisions about which ones they choose to purchase and use.
