Part 4 Lesson Plan: Supporting Diverse Learners
In this module, you will continue work on your multipart, developmentally appropriate lesson
plan for early childhood learners. This module’s focus is on modifying lessons to support diverse
learners. The goals of this assignment are (1) make modifications to the lesson based on the
needs of diverse learners and (2) to apply strategies to make lessons more culturally
responsive.
Using the format provided, add modifications to individualize the lesson plan. Locate articles to
provide evidence to support the use of each modification.
Course Objectives
• Explain the multiple components of curriculum designs appropriate for early childhood
education.
• Design and assess curriculum alignment with local, state, and national early learning
standards.
• Apply the concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to appropriate instructional
designs to meet the needs of all learners including those with special needs.
• Design and evaluate an evidence-based curriculum that promotes physical, social,
emotional, cognitive, and language development in alignment to developmentally
appropriate practice.
• Demonstrate knowledge of effective teacher/family interactions, families’ cultural
backgrounds, and how to involve families in the classroom.
• Design a developmentally appropriate curriculum and learning environment which
includes media and technology in early childhood settings.
Directions:

directions.
4) Create a title page and references page in APA (6th edition) format.
5) After completing Part 4, merge Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the Lesson Plan for submission to the
Module 5 Discussion peer review. Be sure not to repeat the Lesson Objective/s section.

Consider the following diverse learning needs: linguistic, special needs, behavioral, advanced
skills student, low skills student, and culturally responsive, and make modifications to your
lesson plan to accommodate the needs of these students. The types of modifications can
include reducing or increasing the numbers of learning objectives; increasing the timelines for
lesson completion; offering additional support or assistance; adapting the means of
representation, expression, or engagement, or adjusting the difficulty level of a task. Explain
why you chose each modification.
Modifications
1. Linguistic (identify one linguistic challenge, and address how the lesson can be modified to
help students successfully achieve the learning objectives.) Examples of modifications for ELL
students: http://www.colorincolorado.org/article/differentiated-instruction-english-languagelearners
Rationale: (Explain why you chose this modification.)
2. Special Needs (identify one special need, and address how the lesson can be modified to
help students successfully achieve the learning objectives.) Examples of modifications for
visually impaired students: http://www.brighthubeducation.com/special-ed-visualimpairments/62488-classroom-accommodations-and-assisstive-technology-for-students-withvisual-impairments/

3. Behavioral (identify one behavioral need, and address how the lesson can be modified to
help students successfully achieve the learning objectives.) Example of modifications for
students with ADHD: https://www.teachervision.com/add-and-adhd/teaching-methods-andmanagement/10425.html
Rationale: (explain why you chose this particular modification.)
4. Advanced skills students (identify one advanced skill, and address how the lesson can be
modified for advanced skill students.) Examples of ways to differentiate instruction for gifted
students: http://www.slideshare.net/drummosh/differentiating-instruction-for-gifted-learners.
Rationale: (explain why you chose this particular modification.)
5. Low skills student (identify one low skill that may be a potential challenge to achieving the
lesson objectives, and address how the lesson can be modified.) Examples of challenge areas
and modifications for a reading lesson: http://education.msu.edu/te/secondary/pdf/designinglessons-for-diverse-learners.pdf

6. Cultural Responsiveness (identify a way that the lesson can be modified to make it more
culturally responsive.) Examples of strategies for teaching culturally diverse groups of students:
