Prof B’s Intro to Discussion:
Where love (or any emotion) is present, its opposite is usually lurking nearby–earthly life being one of contrasts.
These contrasting states (in our case, love and hate) are readily observed in many of Shakespeare’s works. Contrasts are clearly on view in his tragic love drama Romeo and Juliet. Those emotions are so accessible, in part, because we view through them through the commonly-experienced lens of young love.

The topics of love and hate keep running all through the play. There is a barely recognizable difference amongst love and hate. Both are loaded with passion, and each has a purpose behind its conduct. The initial introduction lets us know of this. It sits up the entire play for us and demonstrates to us that love and hate are the most significant parts of the play (Levenson, 1987).
