Module 2 – Case
FACILITATING AN INTEGRATED RESPONSE TO PUBLIC HEALTH NEEDS IN AN EMERGENCY
Case Overview
The military and National Guard have been activated on several occasions to assist with the public health response in disaster relief efforts. A good example is a COVID-19 pandemic that swept the United States and territories. Citizens were told to shelter in place; businesses, public schools, and nonessential shops were closed; and, prophylactic measures were encouraged to stop the virus.
Case Assignment
After reviewing the background readings, answer the following questions.
Who requests the deployment of troops in a domestic disaster? (Hint – this can happen at the state or federal level.)
What laws allow for domestic deployment? Specify who can use these laws to deploy troops.
Who is in command of the military in a domestic emergency (keeping in mind the difference between the National Guard and active-duty military)?
Remember to give some current examples.
Assignment Expectations
Length: This Case Assignment should be 4 – 6 pages, not counting the title page and references.
References: At least two references should be included from academic sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles). Required readings are included. Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others. When the material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be enclosed in quotes. The references should be cited within the text and listed at the end of the assignment in the References section (preferably in APA format).
Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to the question.
Grammar and Spelling: While no points are deducted for minor errors, assignments are expected to adhere to standard guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. Points may be deducted if grammar and spelling impact clarity.
