The psychologist appeared to be very professional in his approach. He was trying to be thorough in his observation and diagnoses of his client. He asked for his permission to talk to Bob’s friends and mother. However, Bob refused the psychologist’s permission to talk to his mother and gave permission to talk with his friends. The more information you can gather about a client the better the evaluation. The psychologist did seek the mother through investigative measures which was unethical because Bob refused him consent (APA, 2010).
Bob Smith 36-year-old male came to the psychologist concerned about his career choices and life direction. He grew up not spending much time with his father because he worked far away from home. He spent weekends with him, and Bob said his father was a warm, caring, hard worker. While his mother was described as strict, short-tempered with furious outburst over trivial matters. Bob’s father past a year ago. Bob left home to attend San Diego State University. He graduated and became a psychiatric technician for the county. He worked 14 years at this job and the job became boring and predictable. Bob’s fraternity friends were glad he was seeing a psychologist. They said he changed in the last three years and he turned into a suspicious and reclusive man who disappeared for months at a time. They said Bob had loss weight over a few months and they suspect drug use. Bob has not been showing up to work regularly and does not return their calls.
Bob is experienced in the field of psychology and know what to say to impress the psychologist. However, Bob was seeking help because he felt he might be heading for a downward spiral. Bob was showing symptoms of drug use, loss of weight, suspicious and reclusive, not showing up to work regularly and loss of interest in work. I know these jobs can sometime burn you out, but I do not think that was his problem. I would diagnose Bob with substance abuse disorder and anxiety.
Theoretical orientation would be sociocultural perspective Bob learned his cultural values through interacting in his environment. His background was promising in spite of the problems he may have with his mother. He made friends easily and entered the work force right out of college. Something happened and he started to change he stop hanging with his friends as much because they seen the change in him. His behavior was not culturally accepting in this circle.
The Evidence-Based Therapy would be treatment programs for drug abuse and addiction which is delivered in different settings using a variety of behavioral and pharmacological approaches. This program deals with withdrawal as well as behavioral therapy case management and other services for substance disorder (NIH, n.d.).
