Abstract
Healthcare administration is a demanding occupation and the burdens of the job have been exacerbated by the current Covid-19 pandemic that has resulted in more pressure on the hospital systems. As a result, an administrator needs to possess a particular set of skills that are required in enabling top performance in the position. This analysis looks at some of the insights provided by two healthcare administrators. One is in the private sector while the other works in a public healthcare institution. Among the key points that they have revealed is that the job requires the right academic qualifications, experience in the industry, general managerial skills, exercising of a professional code of conduct, and business management skills. The article gives an in-depth look at these competencies and their significance in the role of healthcare administrators while also giving some key examples.
Core Competencies of a Healthcare Administrator
Introduction
A healthcare administrator’s work is now more demanding than ever owing to the difficulties exerted on the system by the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, management has been forced to develop some coping measures to guarantee effective service delivery against a backdrop of revenue and increased risk in taking care of the patients. To realize what exactly pertains the healthcare administration work, I spoke to two individuals who have been in the industry, one in a private organization and the other from a public hospital. Their disclosures were quite similar despite working in different types of healthcare facilities. The interviews revealed some of the critical insights on healthcare administration, especially regarding the underlying qualities that an administrator should possess so as to be successful.
Findings and Analysis
From the interviews, one of the most cardinal qualifications of a healthcare administration is possessing the right skill set and knowledge for the task. This included having academic qualifications in healthcare administration and being experienced in the industry’s demands. Academic qualifications are essential as they impart one with the required set of skills and knowledge. The quality of the education that the administrator has also mattered a lot. For example, having a master’s degree in hospital management or any other related study is a bonus. Nonetheless, it is important that the master’s degree is from a competent academic institution. In the US, the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) is the body that accredits institutions that offer courses in healthcare management (“CAHME”, n.d.). As a result, it is important that the administrator attends a school accredited by this body as this increases his/her competency and marketability in the US. However, academic qualifications are nothing if one lacks enough experience in the field. Possessing fieldwork experience means having been in the industry for some time and honing one’s skills in a demanding facility and one that compels the administrator to face some of the challenges commonplace in the industry. According to one of the interviewees, it is challenging that aid in the cultivation of a healthcare administrator’s competency. This is because the job is typically based on organizing healthcare workers to solve the patients’ problems. Therefore, having quality education in addition to having gained immense experience in the industry are some of the critical factors in facilitating success in healthcare administration work.
Another key outcome of the interviews is that possessing general managerial leadership skills is a prelude to success in the industry (Stefl, 2008). Leadership skills come in handy in this role as, essentially, the healthcare administrator is expected to give direction on what is necessary for the organization at any time. He/she should know how to analyze scenarios and make decisions while considering their implications on those who are set to execute the decisions and the recipients of the decisions who are primarily patients (Stefl, 2008). He/she should also exhibit a professional managerial vision of where the healthcare facility should be placed in the future (Angelova, 2019). The administrator is therefore not only expected to respond to the needs of the industry as they arise. This approach is reactive, and given the severity of some healthcare challenges, such as what has been witnessed during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is bound to lead to a crisis scenario. Therefore, being a visionary is one of the key tenets of building a successful career as a healthcare administrator. The officer should also ensure that his/her vision is in tandem with the organization’s vision and mission statement. This way, management will be based on driving the facility towards achieving some set target, and this is imperative as it assigns focus to the hospital in question. Even in times of a crisis or emergency, the company’s vision should never be abandoned as doing so introduces chaos in the running of the institution. The overall outcome of such an approach is that there would be an improvement in the quality of service delivered to the patients.
Also, the interviewees revealed that being professional always and having cognizance of the responsibilities that one is obliged to fulfill is a necessity for success. The personal conduct of the administrator should be in line with the professional demands of the role. This means that being available when duty demands so even when it is against one’s personal wishes, is imperative for the role. Healthcare is all about responding to sick people’s needs and sometimes those in emergencies that need urgent response. Possessing professional and ethical competence is, therefore, a key demand in this duty. A healthcare administrator has the moral obligation to serve the patients and the community served by the facility. As a result, he/she should embrace the role with an understanding of the impact that his/her decisions can have on the people that the facility serves. Competency in the industry is much inclined to the degree of professionalism that one exhibits while working (Stefl, 2008). Also noteworthy is that this professionalism should also extend to other health workers. Understanding their needs and offering them support when they need it is a crucial obligation that the healthcare administrator should at all times fulfill. Therefore, without professional conduct, a healthcare administrator is bound to fail and also put the lives of many other people such as the patients, the community, and healthcare workers at risk.
Possessing business management skills, especially those that are cardinal in healthcare management, is also vital for any administrator (Stefl, 2008). This is something that both interviewees insisted on.The rationale of this is that despite healthcare facilities primarily dealing with the provision of health services, they also have the business side that, if not well checked, may lead to the collapse of the entire system. Among the critical business skills that are essential include competency in financial management. This is both in managing the medical financial obligations and enabling compensations and payment of the healthcare workers. The other important business skill is human resource management (Stefl, 2008). As it is with businesses, the healthcare industry requires employees to be well managed. The fundamental rules that are applied to the business arena are also necessary for hospital management. Strategic planning is also a vital need of the industry, and this includes various perspectives such as having a vision and mission and instituting a risk mitigation strategy. Lastly, information management is also a business management demand necessary in the healthcare management scope. These needs are of more significance, especially if the healthcare facility is a private profit-making institution. Nevertheless, they also apply to public facilities as without such management skills, running the institutions will be difficult.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the insights that I gained from the healthcare administrators are quite reasonable and applicable as they aim to improve the quality of service in the facilities. They include having the right educational background coupled with experience in the industry. The latter is significant in facilitating the honing of problem-solving skills. Also, having competence in management, upholding professionalism during work, and possessing business management skills is significant in becoming successful in a healthcare administrator’s role. Noteworthy is that these skills are necessary both in public and private healthcare facilities.
