Media Issue Analysis
You will analyze all sides of the current media issue that you used for your annotated bibliography. (will be attached)
- This will include an analysis of the content for validity and reliability in order to understand the complexity of the issue.
The purpose of your analysis is to illustrate how to use the media literacy perspective to dig below the surface of the popular criticisms of the media so that you can uncover problems with a lack of factual basis and faulty reasoning.
- Your goal is not to try to resolve the issue. Instead, you should see that the issue is more complex than is reflected in superficial arguments and that the resolution of the issue requires more than a quick fix.
I want you to demonstrate that you have examined your own opinions to greater depth and either came to appreciate your existing opinions in a more informed manner or resolved to make particular changes so that your opinions become more useful to you.
- Start with the key criticism that is typically made by the public.
- Then break the criticism down into its key components and analyze each of those components.
- Some of these components have a factual basis, so examine whether or not the facts presented in support of the criticism are valid or not.
- Some of these components do not have a factual basis; instead, they rely on beliefs expressed by experts or the public.
The value of media literacy lies in helping you think better for yourself, rather than substituting one opinion for another. I want you to demonstrate that you have learned how to engage important issues by avoiding superficial arguments and unchallenged factual claims to dig below the surface.
In your media issue analysis, you will include:
- Your name (as it appears in Moodle), the course number (LIS 1000), and the semester (Spring 2022).
- This will be at the top of the first page and aligned to the left.
- The title/topic of your media issue analysis.
- This will be centered on the first page below the information listed above.
- Your last name and the page number in a header.
- This will be right aligned inside the header of the document on every page.
- A bibliography of 20 current media articles or resources for an issue of current interest following either APA or MLA format.
- This is not a new bibliography, and may be the same 20 articles you included in your annotated bibliography.
- However, in my comments to some of you on your annotated bibliographies I said you would need more recent, diverse, or relevant media resources. Make sure you have updated your bibliography accordingly and used these new resources for your media issue analysis.
- You do not need to include the annotations from your annotated bibliography.
Your media analysis should be:
- At least 5 pages but no more than 10 pages. (This does not include the bibliography.) You will not be penalized for going under or over the page recommendation, but it is unlikely you could analyze your media issue in less than 5 pages, and if you go over 10 pages, you have likely written more than you needed.
- Double-spaced with 1″ margin on all sides.
- Written in 12pt black Times New Roman font.
