Week 7 Assignment
Unspoken: America’s Native American Boarding Schools
Introduction
The video for this assignment is a special production of PBS Utah. It explores the history of the federal Indian Boarding School system, whose goal was the assimilation of Native Americans. What is amazing to me is how close to now this system feels. We hear from many students and survivors of the boarding school system. (Also, I believe the film would be much better without the music.)
Instructions
A– Watch the video, Unspoken: America’s Native American Boarding Schools
+ Weblink:https://www.pbs.org/video/unspoken-americas-native-american-boarding-schools-oobt1r/
B– As you watch, answer the questions below. When you are finished, save your work, and upload it into Blackboard.
Questions
1– According to the video, how did boarding schools attempt to assimilate Native children into American society? What did Indians have to do when they went to boarding schools? (Minute 2-4)
2—Please summarize the comments of Forrest Cuch and Harry Walters (min. 9.30-11).
3— How did boarding schools inadvertently create a pan-Indian identity? (min. 17-18)
4—How did Indians turn boarding schools from places where their culture was destroyed to places where their culture was preserved and fostered? What is your opinion of the Santa Fe Indian school. (min. 35-40)
5— Consider the definition of genocide adopted by the United Nation in Article II of the Genocide Convention. The crime of genocide includes two main elements:
One — A mental element: the “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such”; and
Two– A physical element, which includes the following five acts:
+ Killing members of the group
+ Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
+ Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part
+ Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
+ Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group based on the lecture notes from Week 6 and based on the lecture notes from Week 7.
Then think about the lecture notes from Week 6 and Week 7. In your opinion, did people in the United States commit genocide against Native Americans in the period from 1848 thru the present? Please explain why or why not use the definition above and facts from the lecture notes. Was it genocide, but not quite? Lastly, if you consider this genocide, who would you hold responsible? These are opinion questions. I would like to hear your opinion based on the facts that you have been presented.
