Mental Health Nursing
I learned not to ask WHY? I didn’t know in mental health it is preferred to not use that word because most of the time in a mental health setting the patient does not know why they are acting this way. I learned it is important not to judge and try and use different therapeutic techniques to deal with different patient situations. Being at clinicals in a mental health care setting helped me understand the material and apply it to real-life situations. I noticed in clinical that the staff was usually very calm and had a way of connecting with their patients to avoid them acting inappropriately or getting aggressive. Mental Health Nursing is very difficult and I don’t know if I would be able to be in that setting, but it was very interesting being at clinical and seeing the disorders we were learning in our books, in person. I have gained knowledge in using communication skills, therapeutic techniques, and different ways to ensure patient safety.
