MOVIE REVIEW PAPER GUIDELINES
1. Select a film or movie in which the topics of chemical dependency and/or codependency are
present. Chemical dependency/codependency may be addressed either directly or indirectly
in the movie.
2. Briefly (1-2 paragraphs) describe the way in which these topics emerge in the movie.
For example, which characters are chemically dependent or codependent (or both)?
3. Describe in detail the behaviors, interaction patterns, signs, symptoms, etc. which lead you
to believe that these characters are codependent or chemically dependent.
4. Apply the criteria for substance abuse, substance dependence, or codependence to these
characters. In other words, what criteria presented in this course are you using to make the
“diagnosis” of codependency or chemical dependency?
5. How would you describe the way in which the chemically dependent or codependent
characters are portrayed in the film or book? For example, negatively? positively? as
heroes? as bums?
6. In light of the material presented in this course, how accurate is the portrayal of chemical dependency or
codependency in the movie? Be specific.
7. Would you recommend this movie or book for others to see or read? Why or why not? Be
specific.
