How did your thoughts and feelings change or shift during the experience?
Final Assignment
Genocide, and Ethnic/Racial Oppression
This assignment provides an opportunity for you to learn and reflect on how prejudice, discrimination and oppression can turn to extreme “solutions” of one group trying to annihilate others. It involves watching two videos related to genocide, or ethnic and racial oppression. You should choose to watch two videos from the list below. Each of the videos below depict issues related to an ethnic or racial group. The two videos chosen to watch should cover two different ethnic or racial groups. As part of this assignment you will also write a paper reflecting on your own process and experience, and responding to the questions in the prompt.
Video options:
Schindler’s List, (1993)
Life is Beautiful (1997)
Smoke Signals (1998)
The Color Purple (1985)
The Promise (2016)

The Pianist (2002)
The Killing Fields (1984)
The Central Park 5 (2012)
Paper Instructions:
1.What thoughts and feelings did you have prior to watching the video? What did you expect? What did you hope for? What concerns or fears, if any, did you have? (5% of the grade).
2.Briefly summarize the plots of the movies (two paragraphs max.) (5 % of the grade)
3.Describe your experience. What were your thoughts and feelings as you were watching the video? How did your thoughts and feelings change or shift during the experience? (10% of the grade).
4.What did you learn that was surprising? What was most salient for you? Did your own reactions and feelings surprise you? In what ways? (20% of the grade).
5.What are you left with from the experience? What does it mean to you? Do you expect the experience to have any impact on your personal or professional life? In what ways? (20% of the grade).
6.How do your intersecting identities and related life experiences influence your thoughts and feelings throughout, as well as what you learned? (20% of the grade).
Remember that the emphasis in this assignment is on reflecting on your own process—the thoughts and feelings, often unacknowledged and unvoiced, that come to you before, during, and after you watched the video. Be sure to consider what you think underlies your thoughts and feelings (i.e., what experiences, messages, and interactions influence your reactions), and include this in your discussion where you can. Include at least one reference for a peer-reviewed publication within the past 10 years in your paper pertaining to processing your own issues related to diversity and multiculturalism, i.e., how did you respond to differences, microaggressions; stereotyping, gendering, etc. (10% of the grade) The citation should specifically relate to an aspect of your identity that impact your experience related to the video. It’s not enough to just list issues you face, but you must define it and discuss your process related to it.
This paper should be typed, 5-6 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, with page numbers. It should be APA style, with a title page, and referenced appropriately (10% of the grade).
