Welcome to Module 5: Developmental Psychology and Racial/Ethnic Identity and
Acculturation!
This module addresses developmental psychology, which is the study of how we develop across our lifespan. This module also explores racial and ethnic identity as well as the dynamics of acculturation.
Learning Objectives
In this module, we will:
Describe the theories of racial identity, such as Cross Nigrescence Theory, Helms’
Model of White Racial Identity, Sellers’ Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity,

the Phinney Model of Ethnic Identity, Poston’s Biracial Identity Development Model. 
 Discuss theories of Acculturation, such as Berry’s Model of Acculturation and
LaFromboise’s Models of Acculturation. 
Discuss the impact of parenting, including a discussion of adverse childhood
experiences

 Describe parenting styles as applied to multicultural perspectives. 
 Describe racial and ethnic socialization, including the impact of parental themes
regarding egalitarianism, cultural socialization, preparation for bias, and promotion of
mistrust.
 Identify ways in which schools and/or interventions can help promote racial and ethnic
identity and increase awareness of the potential impact of school disciplinary practices.
