The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labour Act normally referred to as EMTALA is a state law that was passed in 1986. The law requires that every individual that is getting into the emergency regardless of their insurance status or if there are able to pay or not is stabilized and treated. The law forbids health facilities from transferring uninsured patients due to financial reasons without considering the health condition of the patient. On the other hand, the Patient Self Determination Act (PSDA) mainly encourages all individuals to make choices and decisions regarding the type and extent of health care they are acceptable of or in denial of in case they are unable to make the decision due to an illness.
