throughout this course you will examine a science-themed news article of interest to you. To get started, visit Science Daily and choose a science-related news story published within the past six months on a topic that is of interest to you. You will use this news story throughout this course to complete activities and project work. You can find a news story by browsing the articles on the page, or you can enter a keyword (e.g., “earthquakes,” “cancer,” or “diabetes”) into the search bar. To ensure your article is appropriately focused on the natural sciences, review the questions below:
- Is your news story related to living organisms or systems of the natural world?
- Does your news story include elements of biology and medicine? This may include the topics of zoology (the study of animals), botany (the study of plants), cellular biology (the study of the cell), or anatomy (the study of body structures).
- Does your news story include elements of earth science? This may include the topics of geology (the study of the earth), meteorology (the study of the atmosphere, weather, and climate), oceanography (the study of oceans), or astronomy (the study of the universe).
- Does your news story include elements of physics and the study of matter and energy? This may include the subdisciplines of geophysics (the physics of the earth), astrophysics (the psychics of the universe), or atmospheric physics (a branch of meteorology).
- Does your news story include elements of chemistry or the composition and properties of matter? This may include the topics of biochemistry (the chemistry of life) or geochemistry (the chemistry of geological systems).
- Referring to the news story that you located, answer the following questions:
- Provide the title and the link for the news story.
- Provide a brief (1- to 2-sentence) summary of the story you selected.
- Identify the main topic of this news story.
- Write a brief (1- to 2-sentence) description of the branches of the natural sciences that you feel are part of the topic or main theme of this news story.
