Mantras in Conflict Situations

The mantra I use in conflict situations is “Breathe in, breath out.” I choose this mantra because each time I use it, it always works. I remember my father said when a man gets upset or angry, he stops breathing. When the person starts breathing again then, he can manage the conflict. Whenever I use this mantra, I think of my father.

In the workplace, conflict is a problem or situation that is seen differently by two or more employees who have yet to resolve their differences. Wherever people gather in a workplace, there is bound to conflicts. Conflicts are inevitable in life. According to Ruchira Chaudhary (2019), “Research shows that each of us spends an average of two to three hours a week involved in some conflict or the other at work and in many cases, the outcome of these skirmishes are unsatisfactory.” Unsatisfactory outcomes lead to fallouts, disharmony, and distractions from the real purposes of work. This uncomfortable situation can escalate into a misunderstanding and eventually to a full-blown crisis. Some causes of conflict in the workplace include a new boss, organizational change, a bad appraisal, lack of communication, lack of accountability by an individual or team, and unclear or ambiguous goals.

When in a conflict, I usually get angry and may speak out of tone. I strive to be calm by using the mantra “Breathe in, breath out.” “Research indicates that taking a deep breath when you are upset, angry, or overwhelmed, really does help to calm you down and think more clearly” (Chaudhary, 2019). Whenever I find myself in a conflict situation and getting angry or upset, I take deep breathes. Doing this calms me down and gives me enough time to think clearly. This mantra has stopped me from bursting out loud to my manager when he makes controversial decisions.
