Victim-Offender Relationship
The chances that a violent offender has been a victim of similar violence has always been viewed as being significantly higher than the possibility that he or she has not experienced violence. Consequently, popular culture often seeks to create a link between an individual’s cases of violent offenses to his or her past. For instance, films with violence as part of the story will often include a case in which the director appears to humanize the villain by indicating that his or her childhood was marred with the same kind of abuse he or she appears to be subjecting others to within the film. In essence, behavioral and social science scholars have often made the attempt to develop a clear understanding on the relationship between victimization and offensive activities, most of which have resulted to the conclusion that exposure to violence and the consequent victimization often increases the chances of an individual becoming an offender.
