In 399 BC, an Athens man stood trial for corruption and impiety. The man was called Socrates, and he presented a speech as a self-defense on his trial. The speech famously came to be known as the Apology of Socrates. Socrates speech is by no means an apology only Socrates attempts to defend himself and his conduct certainly not to apologize for it. Socrates tells the court that was only too aware on directness and honesty that he would instead speak to the ways he understood.
