When comparing and contrasting civil rights and human rights, the two can confuse. Fandl (2019) defines civil rights as the rules and laws that protect various freedoms from infringement by the state to which citizens belong. In contrast, human rights are defined as the norms and moral principles, sometimes expressed as laws that describe and proscribe standards of human behavior. To further distinguish the two rights, an example of human rights is having the right to live, liberty, and safety simply because you are human. As humans, we have the right to have differences in nationality, language, religion, and ethnicity. Civil rights are more focused on the laws that the government establishes. The example Fandl (2019) used regarding the Second Amendment sustainability provides a better view of the difference between human rights and civil rights. The comparisons of the rights are vital in the decisions of policies. For instance, although we have the right to freedom of speech, the manner of the information that is released should not cause harm to others as a result. Respect to policy decisions must contribute to the well-being of the citizens of a city or state regardless of human and civil rights. Isaiah 56:1 (NIV) expresses the need to “maintain justice and do what is right.” Proverbs 31:8-9 (NIV) further explains that Christians must speak up for people who cannot speak up for themselves. The two Scriptures correspond with human rights and civil rights definitions because maintaining justice and speaking up for others is needed.
