1.) Discussion – empathy as a tool for effective communication
Before participating in this week’s discussion, please read and annotate Rosenberg, Chapters 6, 7, 8 on empathy in communication.
As a counter argument to consider, please read and annotate Empathy is Overrated as well.
Part ONE: Using Goleman and Rosenberg as references to ground your response, discuss how Empathy can be used as a tool for more effective communication. Part TWO: Using the article “Empathy is Overrated”, explain in your own words how empathy can be a drawback, and develop your discussion to include examples either personally or from current news to support what you are saying.
BONUS CREDIT: Consciously use empathy in a conversation this week, and explain to us specifically how you employed it as well as how it went. How, if at all, did it change the tone of the conversation? How did it feel to use it? What was the response from your communication partner? *USE A SEPARATE POST OR BETTER, USE THE VIDEO FEATURE TO RECORD THE BONUS IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO IT.
Engage with a minimum of two classmates in discussion around the above. You might challenge them, agree with them, question them, or build upon what they are saying. Make connections to our texts whenever you are able, grounding your discussion in what we are studying with concrete text. Use MLA format when citing sources.

1. Connect with what your classmate has said by asking a question that drives the discussion forward, 2. tells a story of your personal connection to what they have said, 3. and/or cites at least one source from our reading in your response.

#2 Discussion – framing effective research questions
Make certain you complete the module before attempting this discussion.
Using your annotated bibliography and continued research, formulate a list of potential research questions on the topic of EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION (minimum of THREE), and list them here.
Respond to a minimum of two classmates, helping them refine or expand upon their questions, and identifying which, if any, you think are great research questions/on which you’d be interested in reading a paper. Try to respond to classmates that may not have responses yet to ensure everyone gets some feedback from peers.

ASSIGNMENT – Annotated Bibliography and Research Essay Proposal/Abstact
Proposal/Abstract : This assignment builds on your annotated bibliography. For this part of the assignment, you will produce a thoughtful thesis statement as the result of your research questions and tentative conclusion(s).
Remember that you will probably modify your thesis… your research and writing will help to guide your ideas. Your proposal will be a page long and should:
1. Detail what you hope to accomplish in your paper, outline the major themes, and identify the critical lens you propose to use. This is the “blurb” that describes your paper for your reader/audience.
2. Be sure to have a clear identifiable thesis. You will want to take a strong position on your topic… “The Pros and Cons of Using Empathy” is not sufficient. Rather, you should take a position on something; your starting point is a conclusion that you have drawn from your research. Please ask your peers, a tutor (in 205!), and your instructor if you are unsure of how to do this.
3. The proposal is not a contract. Your topic will and should change as your progress through your research journey. You will receive feedback on the appropriateness of your topic, whether the scale of the project is workable, and other practical matters.
4. Include your updated annotated bibliography. I am anticipating your annotated bibliography may have changed a bit from the last module with the addition of our questions and narrowing of your focus. Please follow correct MLA formatting as appropriate. Please provide at least three sentences of description for at least five sources. Make certain your sources are CREDIBLE, and that you are using a variety of source material.

The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is. 2. Assess [Analysis]: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is it this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? 3. Reflect [Context/Reflection]: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?”

This is a linguistic study of the function of silence in spoken language. It focuses on silence as communication as relevant to social, political, and emotional aspects of human life. It provides useful evidence on how silence may be used as a form of resistance to power.
