For your Midterm Essay Examination, you will respond to Three of the Five questions presented. This exam covers the required readings and videos in Modules 1–4. Be sure to complete all the assigned readings and discussions on the Learning and Assessment Activities page before you begin this examination.
Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:
Describe the defining characteristic between right-wing extremists and hate groups
Explain the factors that determine why some right-wing extremists and hate groups are more violent than others
Describe the issues that arise for law enforcement problems due to the lack of a conceptual definition of a hate crime
This examination will be available for you to take beginning at 12:00 AM EST on the Monday morning of Module 4 and will close promptly the following Sunday evening at 11:55 PM EST.
Keep the following in mind when completing this midterm essay examination:
When developing your answers, remember, you must include (cited) facts to support the major points in your response. Your responses should not include continuous quotations without your thoughts and analysis, as well. Rather, your responses must reflect a balance between facts and your perspective on the points you made.
Your responses to each of the examination questions should be a minimum of one page (250 words) and a maximum of two pages in length, double-spaced, and written in 11-point Arial font or 12-point Times New Roman.
Include the question you are responding to immediately before each answer.
Include a title/cover page with your name and assignment.
Include appropriately cited references and format them in the American Psychological Association (APA) writing style.
Submit your exam in one MS Word document and place it in the appropriate assignment dropbox for grading.
Your submission is due before the end of Module 4.

Discuss the historical evolution of domestic terrorism from the 1960s to the present.
Explain the controversial issues regarding the definition and conceptualization of terrorism and hate crimes.
Discuss the major ideological differences between right-right-wing extremists and hate groups. Give an example of each.
Explain whether you agree or disagree with some of the explanations regarding the criminological, sociological, and psychological factors that contribute to the radicalization of homegrown terrorists. Be specific about which factors you are discussing. Provide recent examples.
Discuss the challenges that the Internet presents for law enforcement with the emergence of domestic terrorist groups.
Compose your work in a .doc or .docx file type using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word, etc.) and save it frequently to your computer. For those assignments that are not written essays and require uploading images or PowerPoint slides, please follow the uploading guidelines provided by your instructor.
