Addressing and Confronting Bias and Prejudice (Case 2: Chrissy)
Chrissy is a 28-year-old Hispanic female (Argentinian descent) who is expressing symptoms of depression and chronic passive suicidal ideations (Brewer & Harper, 2020). Chrissy is struggling with her family’s culture and beliefs regarding the course of her life. She wants to become an independent entrepreneur, designing clothes for pregnant women. However, her family disagrees with this goal and expects her to raise children as a stay-at-home mother.
As a Hispanic, I can relate to Chrissy’s culture and family beliefs. In the Hispanic culture, men are viewed as the authoritative figures and financial earners while the spouse stays home to care for the household. Although some women do work, the caregivers believe that the woman’s primary focus is to raise the children and adhere to household chores. For example, when a father goes to work, the parents believe that the woman, or woman, in the family should maintain a clean home, take care of the children, and have food prepared upon his arrival. Psychologists must be aware that personal biases and stereotyping can drastically change clinical relationships, and any assumptions regarding shared experiences must be avoided (Tasman et al., 2013).
Theoretical Orientation
There are a couple of theories that can assist in the diagnosis and understanding of Chrissy’s symptoms. Based on the integrative perspective, a psychologist can evaluate Chrissy’s case by utilizing the behavioral and sociocultural approaches. The behavioral theory assumes that behaviors are situation-specific, and an individual’s personality is developed through interactions with the environment and personal experiences (Plagge et al., 2013). According to the behavioral perspective, individuals learn through the processes of association and reinforcement. The sociocultural theory suggests that individuals actively learn through personal experiences. This theory proposes that caregivers, peers, and culture are responsible for developing higher-order functions (Kekeya, 2018). According to the sociocultural perspective, as individuals interact with others, their learned behaviors become integrated with how they understand the world. Chrissy is struggling with her culture and family’s perspectives. When Chrissy was growing up, she may have been punished for not helping maintain the household or completing chores. This may have caused Chrissy to dislike and view these processes in a negative way. On the other hand, Chrissy may have seen her mother struggling with her role within the household and did not want the same outcome for her life. Chrissy’s depressive symptoms and suicidal ideations may have begun from the inability to cope with the constant pressure of following cultural and family beliefs.
Issues and Treatment
The main issues to focus on during Chrissy’s diagnosis and treatment are the expressed chronic passive suicidal ideations and depressive symptoms. Chrissy has explained that she has a plan, the means, but no current intent to commit suicide. A psychologist should first build rapport to obtain critical information through specific questions. For example, have you ever been treated or admitted for psychiatric reasons, are you currently under a mental health professional’s care, who is your social support, and what do you think can be done to help your current situation? These questions will allow a psychologist to gather background information needed to ask more direct questions regarding the following suicidal domains: suicidal ideation, plans, intent, preparation and rehearsal for suicide, attempts, and protective factors (Tasman et al., 2013). Understanding Chrissy’s depressive symptoms are an essential aspect to assist in her diagnosis and treatment as well. The psychologist and patient can focus on any triggers that are causing the issues so that Chrissy can gain more clarity regarding the disorder and recognize the cause of her symptoms. The treatment plan will not only allow her to overcome her situation, but it will allow her to feel in control of the conditional changes in her life.
