Often, hospital bed demands exceed capacity resulting in delays in patient admissions, transfers or cancelation of treatments. This is an issue of particular importance during the viral respiratory seasons when bed demands are increasingly high. When demand surpasses capacity, the resulting delays, cancellations or transfers negatively affects patients as it results in heightened dissatisfaction levels, loss of competitive advantage and loss of the organization’s annual revenue (El-Eid et al. 2015). Faced with increased patient dissatisfaction and an expensive alternative of building more hospital beds, the organization seeks to identify other alternative solutions to avert this issue.
