- Subtractive composition is essential as it ensures that the photographer only focuses on what is necessary for inclusion in the photograph due to the indiscriminate nature of the camera, in which it may include images of anything on which there is light (Hirsch, 2018).
- The principles of design include; unity and variety, emphasis, scale and proportion, the golden mean, and balance
- Unity in photography includes having the image maker construct planned and controlled holistic images, without which the images could lack meaning and would appear haphazard
- The inclusion of variety in a class of similar subjects within an image
- Complex images are always in need of greater unity than the less complex images, which could be achieved through continuation
