Explain the theory of pluralism as covered in class. Why are interest groups good for a democracy according to this theory? Provide one example that fully explains this process.
Pluralism is a theory that is based on the idea that groups and not the people govern the United States. The groups include coalitions of likeminded people, professional and trade associations, unions and financial and business lobbyists among others. The average people make a small percentage of these groups which means the public act majorly as bystanders in this model of power. Two types of groups exist within the pluralist model of power based on how well they are established and how closely they can work with the elected officials of government: the insider groups and the outsider groups. Insiders are more established and can work closely with elected officials while outsiders have less access and are have been established recently.
