Can Modern Society Exist Without Publics?

“Perhaps because contemporary life without the idea of public is so unthinkable, the idea itself tends to be taken for granted, and thus little understood (Warner, 8).”

 In this statement, Warner in trying to understand the different notions of public concludes that it is impossible for modern society to survive without the idea of public. I found this statement very striking as if it was the central argument of the book. In understanding this statement, Warner first describes what public means. Public is an integration of people to confront issues affecting their well-being but not based on their personal interactions. Warner asserts that the idea of publics is essential to the society; however, many people fail to recognize this meaning (7). For instance, in the current world, people can connect on various levels even though they are strangers, and this is only possible because they recognize one another as transient participants in common publics.
