Controlling Extraneous Variables

Extraneous variables can be described as unwanted factors that could adversely confound the data collected in a study if they are not accounted for. As such, these factors potentially form a barrier preventing the researchers from determining a direct causal effect between the manipulated independent variables (IVSs) as well as the measured dependent variables (DVs) targeted in a certain research study. Additionally, the extraneous variables pose a challenge to both the external and internal validity of an investigation. This is because these factors tend to give an impact on the dependent variable and ultimately affect the outcome of the research against the willingness of the researcher and research.
