Student’s Post:

“Hello Professor and class,

Why do you think that many keystone species are predators at the top of the food chain in their respective ecosystems?

The video mentioned this briefly, but I think many keystone species are predators due to their ability to control (either directly or indirectly) the distribution of resources. The predators are at the top and can influence how many resources are available below them. We also learned from the video that this can change. As wales were being hunted and with their numbers thinned their predators had to expand their diet and start consuming otters. That just shows the influence that the keystone predators at the top of the food chain have.

What do you think is the most interesting or significant facet of the video?

I think that most interesting thing in this video was right at the beginning. Dr. Robert Paine removed a species of starfish from an area and by doing just that changed the ecological makeup of that area. I have never thought of starfish as a predatory species, but this changed that way I think of them. It just goes to show you how balanced things can be and small change can have a big effect.

Regards,”

it’s the same subject/ video from BIO Discussion 7, just responding to a peer… detailed response required.
