Learning Goal: I’m working on a women’s studies discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
Discussion topic: (600-800 words in length below with cited references)
Professor Streeter has explained that there is a pervasive myth that women cannot control their emotions. Any display of extreme emotion by women is more likely to be criticized or seen as being out of control. At the same time, there are some situations in which emotion is powerful and appropriate.
Instructions:
Create a post in which you respond to the following questions:
Under what circumstances is it appropriate to show powerful emotions within the workplace? What positive effect can powerful emotions have? Share your reasoning.
Under what circumstances do you think it’s important to save your emotional response until you are removed from a situation? Describe what you see as the benefit to leaders to taking this approach, and why it might be helpful.
In both of these circumstances, would your advice be the same to a male leader as to a female leader? Why or why not?

I always tend to see situations as human beings- not men or women. That helped me to step out of my gender bias. As a manager, there are circumstances when employees might share personal situations- family deaths, sickness, depression, etc. those situations regardless of gender are key moments when a leader might need to show empathy while showing the same emotions. I think in those cases the lack of emotions might be perceived by the employee or colleague as not being understood or something else.

I think in situations where there is a large group of people that is not your “safe place”. in every team I have been, as I get to know my colleagues better- I can identify the people that I can “trust” or I might feel safe sharing some emotions. There are circumstances where you have a person that you don’t get along very well, in that case, you have to be careful of your emotions because you might say things that you regret or change your body language.
In both of these circumstances, would your advice be the same to a male leader as to a female leader? Why or why not?
Yes- as mentioned before- my approach is to think about others as human beings first.
