Course Description: This course is an inquiry into the historical and changing role of sports in American Culture through novels, essays, biographies, films, documentaries and sports related poetry.

This course also addresses several specific discipline-related goals. It aims to help the student:

1)Summarize the historical, literary, and cinematic traditions of sports in American culture

2)Recount the difficulties athletes have faced due to race and/or gender in sports experiences

3)Identify and appreciate the role of sports in American culture

4)Achieve and describe insights into the context in which sports are performed and viewed

You will complete a 3-5 page paper on a sports text of your choice. The first half of paper will provide/explain a few contextual points to the reader. The second half of the essay will explain how your research into this context impacted your viewing of two specific scenes/points in your text

An Analysis of Rocky II

            Rocky II is a 1979 film that features Sylvester Stallone (Rocky Balboa) and an African American who is the current heavy weight boxing world champion Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed). The movie was produced by Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler. Rocky II’s story is a continuation of Rocky I, which was produced in 1976. In Rocky I, Apollo Creed had defeated Rocky Balboa for the world boxing championship match in a split decision. As a result, the public did not believe that he did not necessarily win the match; hence, he was not better than Rocky as he believed. For this reason, he offers Rocky a rematch in Rocky II despite the latter having retired from boxing to do other jobs. The treatment of Rocky and his main opponent, Creed, shows that black athletes experienced numerous challenges in the U.S. in the 1970s as
