Scholarship Summary

Scholarship Summary

You will need to write two pages (double-spaced) on what you see as the major argument(s) that the author proposes in relation to a topic, a set of issues, texts, and/or a figure in Chinese literary culture. Present your summary as objectively as possible. You may not be able to cover every point that the author makes, but focus on the ones that you think are particularly noteworthy or interesting. To the extent possible in two pages, structure your discussion as an introduction, body, and conclusion rather than as a list of bullet points. Save your requests for clarification, questions about background and implications, objections to argument, or opinions for the class discussion that day.

Summary of “Li Zhi, Confucianism, and the Virtue of Desire.”

The book attempts to review Li Zhi’s novel, “On the Child-like Heart-Mind.” Principally, the author explains Li Zhi’s work to be within historical contexts of the end of the leadership of the Duke of Xian. On this, Lee, (2012) perceives Zhi to be lamenting in an exclamation with regard to the 19 year old successor Zhao quoting: “He still had the child-like heart-mind, and from this the gentlemen knew he would not come to a good end.”  However contrary to what is expected, Li Zhi focuses on the passionate and romantic story thereby celebrating the spontaneity, ingenuity, abundance of feeling and desire depicted in the play Western Chamber from which she quotes. Nonetheless the author quotes from among the different commentaries surrounding the play and yet in the end turns out not to shun, lament or deplore the child-like heart-mind but instead yearns for and celebrates it.
