Phylum Chordata
The Phylum chordata is very diverse and most familiar to people. It derives its name from the Greek root word “chord” that means string because the organism found in the phylum have notochord, which is a flexible and rod-shaped structure. The notochord is found during the embryonic development of creatures in the chordata phylum and in the adult phase of some species. It is, however, not found in the vertebrates after the postnatal phase as it is replaced by the vertebral column. The structure is situated between the nerve cord and digestive tube, and offers skeletal support throughout the body’s length. In some chordates, the notochord operates as the principal axial support of the body in the animals’ entire lifetime.
