Screening Response to “Freaks”

            “Freaks” is an American pre-Code horror film that was released in 1932 and directed and produced by Tod Browning. The movie’s original version runs for 90 minutes, but the producers felt it was too shocking to be released to the public. For this reason, several scenes were cut from film and led to its runtime reducing to 64 minutes. As a result, the original version of the movie does not exist today. Despite the extensive cuts that were made on the film to allow it to meet the needs and expectations of the audience, it was received negatively by the American viewers. Consequently, its producers made losses as their movie became an object of controversy.
